Tying the Knot in Ísafjörður: Iceland Destination Wedding

A portrait of a bride and groom during golden hour at Dynjandi Waterfall for their Iceland destination wedding.

Considering eloping or getting married in Iceland? You’ve come to the right place — not only to find your destination wedding photographer but to find some hidden gems and know what to expect along the way, too.

Not long after the height of volcanic eruptions just feet from Blue Lagoon in the summer of 2024, I had the pleasure of spending 14 days split between the Westfjords in Ísafjörður and the breathtaking Southern coast photographing Hollie and Dan’s wedding, exploring all of the sights and sounds Iceland has to offer and immersing myself in Icelandic culture.

This wasn’t just any ordinary Iceland wedding or elopement, though—as a matter of fact, it was actually their second wedding. They’d already had a wedding in New York but rather than invite the bride’s family members that live in Iceland, they decided to opt for an intimate destination wedding in Isafjordur to cement their commitment to one another yet again.

Rather than simply meeting up with them on their wedding day ready to capture it, I spent a week living with the bride and groom in a charming Airbnb in Ísafjörður only steps away from the garden where they tied the knot with a traditional Nordic Pagan ceremony. Officiated by the Chieftan of the Westfjords, guests gathered in a circle and looked on as Hollie and Dan vowed their commitment to one another, the community and the Norse Gods with an oath ring.

Shortly after family photos following their ceremony, we proceeded to the third floor of our Airbnb for an intimate gathering of family and friends, local delicacies and even a live band that played some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. In authentic Iceland fashion, some of the dishes included brauðterta”, which translates to “bread tart” and fermented shark, a local favorite which we washed down with a shot of Brennivín, a traditional Icelandic spirit.

So what’d we do the rest of the time if I spent a week with them? From dawn to…dawn (the sun doesn’t fully set during the summer months—it’s what’s referred to as “midnight sun”) we immersed ourself in the Icelandic culture in more ways than one including home cooked meals, getting lost in stories about Icelandic folklore (like Grýla, a troll who’s favorite meal is a stew of naughty kids) and taking in the sights and sounds of one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

What I learned during those moments is that as beautiful as Iceland is to the eye, the people are just as incredible. We ate like Kings and Queens. We hiked dormant volcanoes, bathed in a handful of hot springs and drove gravel roads to the tops of mountains with only inches between us and a certain fall to death. We even rescued another traveler from their car washing out to sea after they got stuck on a one way, unforgiving oceanside road that few travelers dare take.

If you’ve ever considered visiting Iceland, you have an idea of how stunning the landscapes are but when I tell you your wedding photos will look like they belong in a magazine, I mean it. Picture this—your veil blowing in the wind on a cliffside overlooking the village of Ísafjörður. Taking in golden hour with the sun peeking through the clouds at Dynjandi, one of Iceland’s most notorious waterfalls. Dancing in the rain without a care in the world at local fishing huts and one of Iceland’s yellow lighthouses. And last, but not least, sharing a kiss under an arch made from the jaw-bone of a blue whale at Jónsgarður.

Have something else in mind? Lucky for you, my visit to Iceland didn’t end in the Westfjords. Taking advantage of the trip of a lifetime, my girlfriend and I spent the next week after Hollie and Dan’s ceremony traveling the southern coast of Iceland, making as many stops and memories as we could along the way. We dined inside a greenhouse at Friðheimar, one of Iceland’s largest tomato farms. We watched in awe as natural geysers erupted in the Golden Circle. We left our foot prints in the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, watched hundreds of Puffins burrow into the cliffs of Dyrhólaey and witnessed seals playing in the frigid waters of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Still, that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of our itinerary. The only thing we “missed” was the Northern Lights which just don’t show themselves in the summer. If you want access to our itinerary of 50+ things to do and places to visit (including the best cinnamon roll you’ll ever have in your life) to help plan your own trip to Iceland, I’m happy to share everything we did with you!
